Girl Scouts & Community Service

Service is an important part of the Girl Scout philosophy, and all troops and groups are encouraged to seek out opportunities for service. Girls should be encouraged to plan, promote and participate in service projects for the joy and satisfaction of helping others rather than to earn something for themselves.

In the attachments below are ideas for age appropriate service projects.

Further down the page are specific organizations that can always use our help.

Kids Food Basket is the largest organization in Michigan dedicated to attacking child hunger. They currently provide Sack Suppers to nearly 7,500 elementary school children in the Grand Rapids area every school day during the school year.

On-site volunteers are needed to make the sandwiches; prepare fruits and veggies into serving sizes; bag trail mix; package the over 7,500 sack suppers every day (almost 250 volunteers a day); plus others to lead food drives, decorate the sacks and more

If you want to bring in a group to volunteer, you need to call the Volunteer Coordinator at 616.235.4532.

Activities that can be done at a troop meeting or church or in your home are explained on the web site,

but it is well worth at least one on-site visit to see and understand the whole organization.

Operation Shoebox embraces a practical missionof providing hands-on support for our troops deployed overseas and returninghome.

It is the mission of Operation Shoebox to meet the needs of every hero with dignity and appreciation.

Provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need,

through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers”.

Please do not just create blankets without reading the instructions and guidelines.

Also note that there is always a need for large blankets and blankets with a more "guy" type look. Not every recipient is a cute baby or little girl, many of these go to teens and adults...

Every Girl. Everywhere. Period.

Days for Girls was founded in 2008, when Executive Director Celeste Mergens prepared to travel back to Kenya to continue working with orphanages and communities in the wake of great political and economic upset. One night she awoke with a burning questions: "Have you asked what the girls are doing for feminine hygiene?" When she asked the assistant director of the orphanage she was working with, the answer was shocking: “Nothing. They wait in their rooms.”

The conditions were cramped, unsanitary, and would leave girls without food and water for days unless someone brought it to them. Furthermore, sanitary products were available, but only if girls were willing to suffer sexual exploitation in exchange. This moment was the beginning of awareness to the vulnerability of millions of women and girls face throughout the world every month, simply due to this basic biological function. These women and girls suffer in silence, due to cultural ideas and taboos surrounding this issue.

Washable, quality hygiene kits and accompanying education changes all that. Join us.

DaysThe goal of the Jared Box Project is to lift the spirits of children in the hospital.

The boxes symbolize the importance of play and are filled with well wishes, hope, and love.

Over 200,000 Jared Boxes have been delivered across the United States.

A Jared Box is a plastic storage box filled with small gifts, toys, games, and fun activities.

Each box contains items selected for a specific age and gender.

The boxes are delivered to hospitals.

Jared Boxes provide a special diversion for young patients in emergency rooms,patient rooms, surgical centers, and clinics as they receive chemotherapy and other medical treatments.

Jared Boxes bring smiles and laughter and lift the spirits of children in the hospital.
